The fate of Charlene and Scott, played by Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, as they return to the Australian drama for its final episode has been revealed thanks to a leaked screenplay.
According to Popbitch, the couple will return to Erinsborough at the end of the show and deliver the concluding lines, whose televised wedding was viewed by 22 million people in Australia and the United Kingdom.
Charlene and Scott, who have been married for more than 30 years, pull up to Ramsay Street in their automobile and remark, ‘We’re home.’
On July 1, 1987, two million Australians tuned in to watch the young couple’s wedding on Neighbours.
When their union broadcast in the UK a year later, it drew 19.6 million viewers, making it the third most-watched show in the country in 1988.
Scott and Charlene’s wedding is remembered fondly by Brits and Aussies as an important cultural occasion in the late 1980s.
Kylie and Jason, who were dating in real life at the time, were well-known in both nations and would go on to have successful music careers in the United Kingdom.
Their on-screen romance began when Scott mistook Charlene for an intruder at his next-door neighbour Madge Ramsay’s house, only to discover she was Madge’s daughter later.
After being married, the couple moved to Brisbane from Erinsborough.
Kylie left Neighbours in June 1988, having won four Logie Awards in a single year and being the youngest person to win a Gold Logie.
She went on to have a spectacularly successful music career, selling over 80 million albums around the world.
Jason, like Kylie, pursued a musical career after leaving Neighbours in 1989, and while he wasn’t as successful as his on-screen bride, he had a run of singles including Especially For You, Too Many Broken Hearts, and Sealed With A Kiss.
