When news broke that Kelly Monaco would be leaving General Hospital after more than twenty years, fans quickly began speculating about how Sam McCall would be written out of the show. Many were concerned about the implications of killing off Sam after she had undergone transplant surgery to save Lulu, but that’s unfortunately how the storyline played out. However, viewers should prepare for more emotional moments, as Monaco’s journey isn’t over just yet!
In the October 30 episode, Sam was radiant as she showcased her new engagement ring to her mother, Alexis. Alexis was overjoyed that not only had her daughter done a selfless act by helping to save Lulu’s life, but Sam was also recovering well from her liver transplant and was about to marry the man she loved. But then disaster struck, and Alexis left her daughter’s room in shock as Portia and Liz hurried to respond to the alarming sounds filling the air.
Alexis informed Jason that Sam was perfectly fine until she suddenly turned pale and struggled to breathe. Lucas, Portia, and Liz did everything they could to revive her, but Sam remained unresponsive. Despite Lucas’s insistence to keep trying, Portia determined that it was too late. With tears in his eyes, Lucas officially called the time of death at 5:48 p.m.
Even though Sam may have died in that episode, Soap Opera Digest has reported that this won’t be the last viewers see of Monaco. So, while that episode was incredibly powerful and heart-wrenching, fans will want to be ready with more tissues for the actress’s final appearance later this week, where Sam’s loved ones will bid her a final farewell.
