Ann Mitchell made a surprise return to EastEnders as Cora Cross during Monday’s Mother’s Day episode, marking her first appearance since 2018 as she joined Lauren Branning’s family lunch
A beloved character made a surprise return to Albert Square for a heartwarming Mother’s Day celebration with family.
In Monday’s (March 16) instalment of EastEnders, available now on BBC iPlayer, Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) received an unexpected visit from her grandmother Cora Cross (Ann Mitchell) at the family get-together.
Long-time viewers will recall that Cora, mother to Tanya Branning (Jo Joyner), was a regular fixture between 2011 and 2015, making sporadic comebacks afterwards, though she’s been absent from screens since November 2018.
Peter Beale (Thomas Law) enthusiastically informed his wife about a special surprise awaiting her at the family meal at No. 45, though Lauren appeared preoccupied following her recent assault, evidenced when she declined to allow a car lot customer a test drive.

Noticing her distress, Max Branning (Jake Wood) offered his daughter crucial emotional support, prompting Lauren to extend an invitation to him for the Mother’s Day gathering – much to the displeasure of certain family members, reports the Daily Star.
The atmosphere shifted when Max’s ex-mother-in-law Cora turned up unannounced. It also emerged that Tanya had received an invitation but was unable to travel to Walford.
Throughout the meal, Cora reconnected with relatives, was formally introduced to Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins), and resumed her familiar sparring with Max before Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) requested his departure. Whilst Cora’s appearance in Albert Square was brief, she fortunately had time to reconnect with her grandson Oscar Branning (Pierre Pierre Counihan-Moullier) before departing in a black cab.
Over on X, previously known as Twitter, a surprised viewer wrote: “Blimey wasn’t expecting that old battleaxe Cora to turn up #Eastenders.”

Another chimed in: “OMG CORA CROSS IS BACK #Eastenders.”A third person commented: “CORA CROSS IN 2026 #eastenders.”
Lauren began her day still rattled by the car theft incident, which viewers are aware Mark Fowler is covertly responsible for.
Cora had a private word with Lauren, during which she confessed that the car theft had shaken her confidence.
Cora offered her granddaughter some straight-talking encouragement and highlighted Lauren’s resilience in overcoming whatever obstacles come her way.
Bolstered by Cora’s pep talk, Lauren made the decision to take up Mark’s proposal to handle premium vehicles at the dealership and opted to keep this from her father – but will she uncover Mark’s genuine criminal intentions before it’s too late?
