Adam J. Harrington Announces Departure from General Hospital

When Sonny shot Jagger point blank at the conclusion of Friday, August 30, General Hospital’s episode left viewers in disbelief. After taking over as John “Jagger” Cates in February 2024, Adam J. Harrington shared a picture of a sunset on Twitter/X with the caption, “Good night all.” Fans began to speculate if this meant the end of Harrington’s tenure on the soap opera.

Well, over the weekend, the actor shared a couple more posts that made things more official, even if Harrington couldn’t resist filling the first one with bad puns! “Well, General Hospital, it was a blast, literally!” he wrote. To [GH executive producer] Frank Valentini, producers, and writers: Thank you for the shot at joining your world. I loved it. To the phenomenal cast and crew, it was an honor to witness the caliber of your work. Now, seriously… I will miss you all.”

The character of John “Jagger” Cates was introduced back in 1992 and was played by Antonio Sabato, Jr. until 1995. He reprised the role in 2008 for the GH spinoff Night Shift, which was the last viewers saw of him until this year. The FBI agent was reintroduced looking to bring justice to Port Charles, but grew more and more obsessed with taking down Sonny. Cates went further and further overboard trying to make it happen but ultimately met a violent end as Sonny shot him in cold blood.

While John wasn’t particularly well-liked in Port Charles this time around, portrayer Harrington earned quite a few soap fans who enjoyed his performances and the drama that his character brought to the soap. “To the GH viewers and fans,” he declared, “It’s been an honor being in your world and feeling your passion. To those who have written a goodbye, I’ve read every word and I’m deeply humbled. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Until we meet again…”
