Ken Barlow of Coronation Street and his granddaughter Amy seemed to be being tricked by conman Rowan Cunliffe on Monday, but would the soap opera icon be one step ahead?
On the ITV serial opera Coronation Street, Ken Barlow has the potential to defeat the villainous Rowan Cunliffe.
Weeks after his granddaughter Amy Barlow was seduced by the newcomer, the character seems to be drawn in by the con artist in the most recent episode. Earlier this year, Rowan made his television debut as part of the ITV soap opera’s cult storyline, when he recruited people for his self-improvement institute.
But fans know he’s just after money and it’s all a scam. He’s been targeting vulnerable people to invest including Leanne Battersby, and Amy was his latest target.
After some sessions she seemed keen to join Rowan and the others, and wanted to put her £40,000 inheritance money towards the organisation. Her grandfather wouldn’t release the funds though, as they were left for her by her late grandmother Deirdre.
Amy’s mother Tracy Barlow soon found herself reeled in too with her not even questioning the institute, instead telling Ken to let Amy have the money. Soon enough, Ken wanted more information and asked Rowan and Leanne about the group.
Leanne, who is still under Rowan’s influence, soon told Ken all about the organisation’s aims, the work it’s done as well as the profit members and investors could make over the coming months and years. It seems this is all it took for Ken to decide it was legit, and he agreed to release Amy’s funds.
Amy was thrilled and hugged him, saying she was keen to be involved with the group, believing it would set her up for the future. Of course viewers know it’s all a scam and Rowan is not who they say he is.
But would Tracy and Ken really fall for this and really just hand over £40K like that, to someone they don’t even know? It seems so given Ken has approved the money being used, but with spoilers teasing Tracy will seek revenge on Rowan, could the pair actually be one step ahead?
Might Ken not be as sold on the idea as he’s claimed, and might he stop Amy from investing? Regardless if he does or not, Ken will no doubt take action if he finds out the truth so might he be the one to trigger Rowan’s downfall, getting rid of him for good?
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITV X.*
