Home and Away: Tane becomes the victim of town gossip

Since finding a baby in a bag on the beach, Tane hasn’t left her side. He took his commitment one step further by applying to be an emergency foster carer.

Tane’s chances of becoming Maia’s caregiver are drastically reduced this week when he becomes the target of some salacious gossip in Home and Away this week. Who’s spreading it?

At the hospital, where Tane (Ethan Browne) has been since finding the baby in a bag on the beach, Harper (Jessica Redmayne) hands him a copy of the local newspaper and apologises.
Confused, Tane opens it to find a photo of him alongside a scathing article that questions his “obsessive” relationship with baby Maia. Turns out, Harper’s sister Dana (Ally Harris) was tricked into answering a journalist’s questions and Tane’s character is now under attack.

“Tane has been visiting the baby regularly at the hospital, which the staff begin to notice, but he feels protective of her,” Ethan explains of his character’s bond with Maia.

Later, the same journalist arrives at the hospital seeking more answers and Tane’s temper gets the better of him. He lashes out at the journalist, who leaves – but not without lodging a formal complaint first.

Will his angry outburst land Tane in even more trouble?

Tane, the infant girl’s caregiver in Home and Away, never goes to sleep or eats unless a doctor is there.

Mali (Kyle Shilling) and Mackenzie (Emily Weir), who are worried about his actions, politely inquire about his intentions. To their astonishment, Tane reveals that, should her parents fail to come forward, he wants to take care of her. In addition, he gives her the Maori name meaning bravery, Maia.

Mac worries that by taking care of someone else, he will be replacing his failed marriage to Felicity (Jacqui Purvis). However, Tane is unmoving.

“Tane is doing his best to move forward and focus on life after the split,” Ethan tells TV WEEK. “He’s trying to figure out what to do with himself, but he’s doing very well and the future is looking hopeful.”

Despite objections from his housemates and a stern talking-to by Dr Bree (Juliet Godwin), Tane is undeterred and proceeds with the plan. He’ll do anything to protect Maia. There’s just one problem: to foster a child, he needs to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

“He wants the best for this baby and to make sure she’s placed in a proper home and care,” Ethan explains. “He can’t help but feel responsible for her, as he found her.”

When Felicity overhears Roo (Georgie Parker) and Alf (Ray Meagher) discussing the situation at Salt, she feels compelled to help. That afternoon, she looks into how to apply to be a caregiver. But is Flick doing it for the right reasons or is she hoping it will bring Tane home?
