The Home & Away heart throb found romance, marriage and family off screen with his co-star Rebecca Breeds, with the pair having an on-screen relationship and moving to the US
Home and Away secured a special place in many Irish people’s hearts as one of the most dramatic soap operas on screens.
The Aussie show had us glued to our couches, and introduced viewers to some unforgettable fictional personalities.
One of which was Romeo Smith, who joined the cast of characters in 2009, portrayed by Luke Mitchell. While Romeo garnered much romantic interest on the show, one relationship found its way off screen.
The actor is originally from the Gold Coast in Queensland.
Luke’s character was considered a heart throb on the soap, with an on-screen relationship playing out with character Ruby Buckton, before marrying character Indi Walker, played by Samara Weaving.
He left the programme in 2013 after character Romeo was diagnosed with stage four melanoma.
However, Luke and Rebecca Breeds, the actress portraying Ruby, fell in love off set too.
Rebecca is originally from Sydney in New South Wales and joined Home and Away in 2008 as Ruby Buckton, the daughter of Home and Away favourite Charlie Buckton.
Summer Bay’s beloved copper Charlie stole hearts on the show from 2008 to 2012 with her chaotic love story involving the town’s notorious rebel Darryl “Brax” Braxton.
Luke and Rebecca met just before they were both filming the soap, at a party for a mutual friend. Luke was about to start filming for the show, while Rebecca was already a Summer Bay star.
Both Luke and Rebecca didn’t want their characters to start dating on Home and Away as they thought being together so much would be difficult.
However, their relationship has stood the test of time, with the couple welcoming their newborn son in February 2025.
On November 5, 2024, Rebecca shared a snap to Instagram to announce her pregnancy.
Luke announced the birth of their son on Instagram, saying: “Welcome to the world little man. Thanks for choosing us. We love you beyond words.”
In 2013, the couple tied the knot in Kangaroo Valley Bush Retreat in New South Wales.
“We certainly spent most of our relationship on the show. And when I finally finished, we were engaged, and then we got married, and then we moved overseas,” Luke said previously.
The Summer Bay golden couple live in America, and share a dog named Alfie. They have both found success across TV and film.
Luke starred as John Young in The Tomorrow People from 2013-2014, as Lincoln Campbell in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and he worked alongside Michael B. Jordan for the 2021 film Without Remorse.
Home & Away is not the only show they have worked on together – with the couple also both working on The Originals spinoff Legacies.
