Coronation Street left viewers stunned tonight when Max Turner (played by Paddy Bever) confessed to the murder of Joel Deering (Calum Lill).
Max admitted to striking Joel with a rock and pushing him into the river, leading DC Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) to charge him with murder.
Fans have been speculating for weeks about Joel’s true killer, so actor Paddy Bever is relieved to finally reveal the truth.
“People have been constantly messaging me on Instagram, asking things like ‘Who killed Joel?’ or ‘We know it was you!’” Paddy shared. “A lot of fans even thought Joel might still be alive and had staged his death, so it’s a relief to finally have the secret out.”
He added, “This storyline is complex; it’s not just a straightforward murder. Many characters are involved, each with their own dark secrets, so it’s great that the blame isn’t entirely on one person.”
During questioning, Max explained that he confronted Joel because he wanted him to answer for what he did to Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton), someone Max cares deeply about.
“Max is genuinely willing to sacrifice everything to protect Lauren and Frankie,” Paddy explained. “While filming, I realized Frankie’s relationship to Max is just like Max’s relationship with David, given Frankie is dating Max’s mom. Max has a strong desire to protect Frankie and give him the family life Max himself missed out on with his own mother, Kylie.”
Though charged with murder, Max claims he acted in self-defense. In Friday’s episode, viewers will finally see the full story of the night Joel died.
