Neighbours theme hits number one on iTunes chart after passionate fan campaign

Following the news that Neighbours would be axed from Channel 5, the iconic theme song has soared to the top of iTunes’ charts.

As fans would be aware, the hit Australian soap was revealed over the weekend by the UK broadcaster will be canceled this summer, with production halted indefinitely.

Fans have since organized a campaign to save the show, including a petition asking Channel 5 not to cancel it.

They’ve also shown their support by striving to make Barry Crocker’s theme song number one in order to “draw greater notice to how much we love and need Neighbours in our lives.”

Well, they’ve done it, as the song has now surpassed Ed Sheeran, Sam Fender, and Encanto’s ‘We Need To Talk About Bruno’ to take the top place on iTunes.

In a statement to Digital Spy, Channel 5 revealed the initial axe news: “After this summer, Channel 5 will no longer broadcast Neighbours. We’d like to congratulate the cast, Fremantle, and the entire production crew for their excellent work on this landmark series, which has been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade.”

They added: “We’d also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years. We recognize that there will be disappointment about this decision, however, our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers.”

Since the news came, some of the show’s stars, including Geoff Paine and Jackie Woodburne, have spoken out about the show’s possible termination.
