On next week’s episode of Home and Away in the UK, Mackenzie faces John and Alf’s fury as her debt woes escalate, while Martha is forced to prepare for the worst…
Despite the fact that her restaurant, Salt, was on the verge of bankruptcy, Mackenzie Booth (Emily Weir) had sworn that their last illegal, but extremely profitable, poker night would be a one-time event. But, as she sinks farther and deeper into debt, it appears that she may have to reconsider.
After numerous unanswered text messages, Mac’s surf club manager John (Shane Withington) finally catches up with her—two she’s months behind on her Salt! rent!
Dean (Patrick O’Connor) and Ziggy (Sophie Dillman) overhear Mac promising that everything will be fine. Later, when Ziggy meets Mac, she explains her predicament: things are rapidly worse.
Mac should seek Dean for help again, according to Ziggy, but she refuses to accept another handout from her brother and runs into another roadblock when the bank refuses to extend her credit.
When Nathan (Ryan Panizza) shows up at Salt later, he’s eager to speak with Mac about hosting another poker night. As tempted as she is to say yes when he says that her event was the best one he had ever attended, Mac needs to remind him that there are no more evenings planned.
Nathan then admits that he had a major loss that night, and it wasn’t his money. The individuals he owes money to are desperate for it, and one more night could offer him the opportunity to reclaim it all.
Mac apologises once more, stating that she is unable to assist him. When Dean notices Nathan leave the surf club, he becomes concerned about his sister and runs upstairs to find out what’s going on.
When John comes back to collect the rent, Gerald (Stephen Hunter), a committee member, is getting his knickers in a tangle, and John wants to get him off his back. Then assures John that it will be delivered by the end of the week, and she appeases him by offering him a free supper.
When Nathan staggers in, horribly beaten, Mac has managed to pull together the rent by some miracle.
Mac tries to assist, but he’s already said what he requires—another poker night. He’ll be dead if he doesn’t get the money back to them!
Mac examines the rent envelope she’s just drawn up, determined not to give in and put on another event…
Mac runs into John the next day, and she’s had enough of him bothering her—she doesn’t have the rent yet, but he’ll be the first to know when she does. John claims that he has no choice but to bring this up with Alf, the president of the surf club (Ray Meagher).
Dean, as usual, is within earshot and follows her back up to Salt, where she admits to giving the rent money to Nathan in front of Ryder (Lukas Radovich) and Felicity (Jacqui Purvis).
Everyone is stunned, and while Flick confesses that she has had no reason to doubt Nathan thus far, she is sceptical that Mac will ever receive his money back…
Later, Mac is visited by Alf, the big cheese himself, who is unexpectedly understanding of Mac’s predicament.
While he understands her difficulties, the club nevertheless has its own bills to pay. He eventually agrees to extend Mac’s deadline for collecting the rent for another week.
Mac realises she only has one option and approaches Flick about organising another poker night…
Away from the surf club, Alf is preoccupied with his own issues, including his wife Martha’s (Belinda Giblin) deteriorating health.
Martha returned to Summer Bay last week after a break at her home in Merimbula, where she had gone as tensions mounted following her refusal of Roo’s (Georgie Parker) gift of a kidney.
Martha was put into hospital again in the weeks leading up to her homecoming, but when she eventually got home, she told Roo that she’d changed her mind and that she’d be willing to go ahead with the transplant after all, much to everyone’s happiness.
Martha arranges an appointment with the transplant coordinator Jesse (Nat Jobe) this week, but it’s evident that she’s deteriorating as she has a series of coughing fits in the days leading up to the visit.
Martha swears that she is OK, and when the three of them arrive at the hospital, Jesse explains that they will need to repeat all of the tests to see if Martha is still fit for a transplant.
Jesse is concerned about Martha’s cough and seeks the assistance of Logan (Harley Bonner), who prescribes a CT scan and an x-ray.
While Martha’s blood tests are normal, scans reveal that her high blood pressure has caused the fluid surrounding her lungs to grow.
When Logan tells the family that Martha is no longer strong enough for the operation, and there’s a risk she never will be, the family is distraught!
Martha hates herself and apologizes to Alf and Roo for canceling the initial transplant so long ago.
The next day, as Roo prepares to visit Martha in the hospital, Alf warns Marilyn (Emily Symons) that Martha’s anxiety is likely to worsen her blood pressure.
He’s scared that he’s going to lose her, and there’s nothing he can do about it…
