After serving in the Australian Army for six years, Nicholas decided to try his hand at acting and landed his first television role in the popular soap opera Home and Away
Although Nicholas Cartwright may be most remembered for his role as Senior Sergeant Constable Cash Newman, he actually served in the Australian Army for six years.
After leaving his previous job, the Home and Away actor decided to try his hand at acting and eventually secured a role on the drama.
Even his sister, who recently joined with her own role, has had the chance to work with him on the show.
What did Nicholas do in the army?
Nicholas served as a rifleman for six years in the Australian Army.
Before deciding to attempt something different for his post-military life, he was sent to Afghanistan and East Timor during his time in the military.
The actor had pondered joining the police or fire department but decided against it because of his passion for the arts.
When he left the military, he said, “I was considering joining the police or the fire department, different governmental organisations that reminded me of the military.”
Then, as I settled into my post-military civilian life, I began to feel driven to the creative arts, but I wasn’t really sure what to do about it because I didn’t see it as a feasible career.
“Then, one day, I just decided to bite the bullet and head to Nida (the National Institute Of Dramatic Arts) and do a three-year course.”
How did Nicholas land his Home and Away role?
2019 saw Nicholas’ graduation from NIDA, a theatre school in Sydney.
He applied to join the New South Wales Police and the Australian Federal Police as soon as Covid-19 arrived in Australia and it became challenging to obtain employment.
He persisted in trying out for acting parts, notably that of Lewis the murderous nurse in Home and Away.
Luke Arnold won the part, therefore Nicholas is glad he didn’t get it because he eventually played Cash Newman.
Why did Nicholas decide to become an actor?
Nicholas’ sister Zara also works in the entertainment world, thus acting runs in the family.
He announced on social media that he would be appearing in Summer Bay with his sibling.
He announced, “My gorgeous little sister will be joining us on @homeandaway this week! Not sure if y’all have seen the trailer.”
“I’ve never enjoyed a shoot more. It was virtually impossible to avoid giggling with delight as I looked across at her between takes. Working with family in such a strange world is such a lovely experience.
“Welcome @nottherealzarazoe to the team! Watch to find out what we do.
Zara previously starred in the 2015 drama film Skin Deep and in the 2019 movie Ride Like a Girl alongside Teresa Palmer and Sam Neill.
