Why is the Logies called the Logies? The origin of TV’s night of nights’ name may surprise you

The TV WEEK Logie Awards have been around for as long as we can remember (62 years to be exact), but the origin of the moniker of television’s night of evenings is still a mystery to most Australians.

The annual TV WEEK Logie Awards celebrate Australia’s remarkable TV industry, awarding talent across entertainment, drama, comedy, reality, lifestyle, current affairs, and sport, with their trademark razzmatazz and anything-can-happen excitement.

While the awards are well-known, they were originally known as the TV WEEK Awards, but were renamed the TV WEEK Logie Awards a year after their start in 1960.

Graham Kennedy, a legendary Australian comic, proposed the name ‘The Logies’ in honour of John Logie Baird, a Scottish inventor who helped pioneer television in 1926.

The Graham Kennedy Award for New Talent was established in 2006 to honour Australia’s newest celebrities who have built a name for themselves in the entertainment industry.

Matt Evans of Home and Away, Alessandra Rampolla of Married At First Sight, Tony Armstrong of The Project, comedian Melanie Bracewell, Carlos Sanson Jr of Bump, and Will Lodder of Love Me are among the 2022 nominees.

The TV WEEK Logie Awards will return to the Gold Coast on Sunday, June 19, after a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Graham’s influence and impact on the Logies goes much beyond the moniker he coined.

This year, the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter will be presented for the first time.

Bert Newton was the quintessential Australian TV host and performer, inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame, winner of four Gold Logie Awards, and 20 times host of television’s most famous night.

“We are so thrilled Bert is being recognised this way and will be part of the Logies every year moving forward. It was such a big part of his career and he just loved it, so I know he would be pretty pleased with this honour,” Bert’s wife Patti said.
